Satou Tatsuhiro é um cara na faixa de idade dos 21 anos, é um "Neet" (Not in Employment, Education or Training - pessoa que não trabalha nem estuda) e abandonou o curso superior há muitos anos. Satou também é um "hikikomori" (no ocidente o termo relativo seria alguém com acentuado grau de fobia social). Dessa forma o personagem acabou se prendendo em um universo de conspiração que ele acredita ser comandada pela organização secreta intitulada "NHK (Nihon Hikikomori Kyokai)". No entanto, Satou encontra Misaki Nakahara, uma garota que o seleciona para participar de seu "projeto" prometendo curá-lo de sua condição, desde que ele assine um contrato para participar deste "projeto". Outro personagem central na historia é Kaoru Yamazaki, um antigo colega de Satou. Ele é um "otaku" e estudante que aspira ser um criador de jogos, lembrando ainda que a amizade dos dois será responsável pelos momentos mais hilários da série.
