Contemplando da década de 1940 aos anos 1980, o filme mostra como a religiosa católica enfrentou uma doença respiratória incurável, o machismo, a indiferença de políticos e até mesmo os dogmas da Igreja para dedicar sua vida ao cuidado dos miseráveis – personificados na figura do fictício João (Amaurih Oliveira) –, deixando um legado que perdura até hoje.
